Guy Fawkes Day is celebreted on the 5th of November in memory of unearthing Guy Fawkes' plot against the Parliament.
Peopleburn bonfires and make fireworks. Children dressed in costumes walk in the streets asking "Ф penny for the Guy". Then they buy tasty food and fireworks with this money and burn Guy in the fire.

I guess there is also some ancient pagan meaning in it. In November, in the end of autumn people want to make the surroundings brighter and lighter.

We've read about this holiday in the school textbook, it was the 5th form, I suppose.
(Btw, are the tenses correct in the sentence above?)

But there were only 4 lines, the rest of the story our teacher told us in Russian. I then thought it was strange to celebrate someone's being executed...

SunKitten, I guess it's better to use Past Simple here, otherwise it sounds as if you're still at school.

Strange holiday, I agree. Actually, there is no convincing evidence, this guy really existed. And what's more, who really cares about what happened kind of 4 centures ago.
